International Sanctions Act 2003

Summary

This is a short Bermuda enabling statute that grants the Minister responsible for the Legislature power to make regulations giving effect to the United Kingdom's international sanctions obligations. It does not itself impose sanctions or list prohibited persons; it is the legal basis for subsidiary sanctions regulations and orders that are issued from time to time.

• Regulation making power: The Minister may make regulations to implement any UK international obligation relating to economic or other sanctions on a country, organisation, person or group of persons.
• Enforcement provisions: Such regulations may include provisions for the apprehension, trial and punishment of persons who contravene them.
• Parliamentary oversight: Regulations made under the Act are subject to the negative resolution procedure.

Because the Act is a framework power rather than a self-executing sanctions regime, the operative restrictions and compliance duties for regulated entities and individuals arise from the specific sanctions regulations made under it, not from the Act's text itself.
