This is an advisory notice from the BVI Financial Services Commission informing the public that the Burundi (Sanctions) (Overseas Territories) Order 2015 has been ratified and extended to the British Virgin Islands. The Order gives effect in the Territory to European Union sanctions against Burundi adopted under Council Decision 2015/1763/CFSP of 1 October 2015.

  • Asset freeze: Applies to persons, entities or bodies designated by the EU Council as undermining democracy or obstructing a political solution in Burundi, including through violence, repression or incitement to violence.
  • Travel ban: Applies to the same designated persons, as well as those involved in planning, directing or committing acts violating international human rights or humanitarian law, or serious human rights abuses, in Burundi, and their associates.
  • Licensing exemptions: The Order allows the Governor to license certain activities that would otherwise be prohibited, in line with exemptions under the sanctions regime.

The advisory is informational, directing regulated entities and the public to the full text of the EU Council Decision and the Order itself, and to the UK consolidated list of financial sanctions targets, which updates automatically as new sanctions orders are extended to the Overseas Territories.
