Summary

This is a commencement notice bringing specified sections of Bermuda's Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (PIPA) into force. It does not create new substantive rules itself but fixes the date from which most of PIPA's operative provisions become legally effective.

  • Provisions commenced: Sections 3 to 25, 30 to 34, and 37 to 50 of the Personal Information Protection Act 2016 come into operation.
  • Commencement date: 1 January 2025.
  • Made and made-date: Notice made 30 September 2024 by the Minister responsible for information and communication technologies policy and innovation, under section 52 of PIPA; noted operative date 7 November 2024.

Organisations and individuals subject to PIPA should treat 1 January 2025 as the date from which the substantive data protection obligations in the listed sections (covering matters such as data processing principles, individual rights, and organisational duties) become enforceable in Bermuda.
